Investors who believe only on low-cost index funds to grow their portfolios are missing out on the advantages that active management can provide in select sectors of the market, some industry professionals are arguing, bolstered by a recent study on fund returns.

Index funds have grown in popularity because of their lower cost and because of the fact that the majority of active fund managers cannot beat the performance of those benchmark indexes anyway.
